For beginner adults just starting out with snowboarding or snow skiing, is it best to rent or buy ski equipment before hitting the slopes? What is the minimum required in terms of clothing, gloves, scarves and so forth one needs to take for a week of beginner classes and various learning at the resorts?

I think it will depend on whether you plan to become a regular skier or snowboarder.  For me renting was the best option at first because I did not know if I would like the sport or not.  It was easy to rent the equipment at the slopes and in most cases, the people renting the equipment are great at telling you the best size of skies and the best shoes and binding.

Thanks, Candy. The information helps me because we'll be traveling with a group of people. Some have experience on skis while others have never been near them. I think snowboarding would be fun to learn, and I know just about anyone can do some sort of sledding or tubing.

If you are a beginner I would just rent your gear. You will figure out as you practice, the size and type of gear that you like best.  You need water proof pants, gloves, and jacket in addition to goggles and extra socks on.

I agree, if you are a beginner, rent the board/skis. Then, once you know this is an activity you are going to stick with, treat yourself to some nice equipment.

I am still a beginner. I always rent my equipment. It's just easier for me. Maybe someday, when I get more experienced I may consider buying my own equipment.
